As a reader of an English blog, you have most likely heard of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test. It is a standardized test of English language skills, which is used in many areas (in particular for university admissions). Interestingly, I clearly remember that in Austria, people used to pronounce the OE in TOEFL like the German umlaut Ö, even though TOEFL is clearly and English acronym. The correct pronunciation of TOEFL is [ˈtəʊfl] in British English, and [ˈtoʊfl] in American English, listen here. Isn’t it ironic that people mispronounce the name of the English test that they are about to take? Certainly not a good start.
